On Wednesday, 5th December, Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki hosted over 200 members of the Diplomatic Corps and the Embassy’s British partners at a Christmas reception.

In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Rzegocki summarised many of the events organised throughout 2018 such as the Belvedere Forum in February which deepens the dialogue between British and Polish civil society, the Polish Heritage Days in May that aims at promoting Polish culture across the UK, and the series of events this November commemorating 100 years of Poland’s regaining independence. “It is worth noting that in 2018 we also celebrate another important anniversary - 25 years since the ratification by Poland of the European Convention of Human Rights. We are proud of this anniversary and in the coming year we will continue to work closely with Britain and other nations within international frameworks aiming to protect human rights,” said the Ambassador.

“2019 promises to be just as eventful, as we will be celebrating the 250 anniversary of establishing Polish-British diplomatic relations. By the decision of the Polish Parliament, one of the oldest in Europe - now celebrating 550 years of its existence - great Poles shall be commemorated: writer Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, social activist and freedom fighter Anna Walentynowicz and composer Stanisław Moniuszko. We will also be celebrating events that shaped Polish history: The Polish-Lithuanian Union and the Silesian Uprising”, reminded the Ambassador.

Ambassador Rzegocki and his guests shared the Christmas spirit by singing “Silent Night” in both English and Polish, while Anna Szałucka nad Joanna Gutowska entertained everyone with their beautiful music. The venue was decorated with some of the finest examples of Kraków Nativity Scenes, in Polish called szopkas, which have been recently included on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
