    On the 25th of April, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London hosted a meeting with medical sector representatives, during which Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz was awarded with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

     

    The aim of the meeting was to reach out to members of the Polish diaspora who work in the medical sector in the United Kingdom, in order to facilitate the establishment of valuable contacts and possible future cooperation.  


    The meeting was attended by many Polish doctors working in the United Kingdom, as well as members of the Polish Medical Association, the National Health Service and many others associated with the British healthcare sector. 


    In the welcoming speech, the Polish Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki said: “Poland and the United Kingdom have strong and long-lasting relations in the area of joint activities in the medical field. Today, Polish methods of treatment are a source of inspiration for the British researchers, while the development of British medicine is a model for many Polish medical institutes and centres. Research conducted by Polish and British medics are complementary and mutually beneficial.”


    During the event, the Ambassador awarded, in the name of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his outstanding services in developing Polish-British cooperation in science and academia. Professor Borysiewicz is a British physician and an eminent immunologist of Polish descent and a creator of the HPV vaccine. He is a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council and the Chairman of Cancer Research UK. Throughout his professional career, Professor Borysiewicz has been very active in strengthening the international significance of Polish science and increasing Poland's presence in the international arena. On 10th April 2019, Professor Borysiewicz received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Jagiellonian University at the University’s Collegium Maius.


    After the official part of the event, invited guests participated in a reception which was enriched with a performance of Łukasz Krupiński, a talented Polish pianist, who performed compositions of a famous Polish composer of the Romantic era - Fryderyk Chopin.
